Especially when it comes to getting them new supplies that’s important for them to be that “over achiever”. One thing that parents have a hard time picking out is proper skin care for their teens. Keeping acne under control is simple and shouldn’t be stressful. Putting your teen on a proper skin regimen can also eliminate one more stress off them as well.

Another school year has started and many parents are preparing their kids for what we hope to be a great year.  Yes, you will need the school supplies, the new shoes, and clothes but don’t forget about the most important part and that is your teen’s skin.

Many studies have been published regarding skin and acne with a recent study indicating that 85% of all teenagers suffer from acne and that acne affects over 50 million Americans.  When acne strikes adults and teens its effect can include low self-esteem, social isolation, loneliness and it can even cause anxiety, phobias or depression.  It’s important to have an effective plan to combat acne and to overcome the harmful psychological effects it has on teenagers.  Treating acne should be every teen and parent’s first line of defense.

Back to school season means more exposure to germs and dirt. Make sure you pack some portable cleansing wipes into your supply kit.  If you’ve neglected your skin all summer and you want to be looking your best for the first day of school, start today! Changes to the skin don’t happen overnight, no matter what the advertisers tell you.  Make sure to use a cleanser that both cleanses and exfoliates without stripping or irritating the skin. If you’re not allergic, cleansers containing alpha-hydroxyl acids or fruit enzymes are the best for exfoliation. Products with rough granules are not appropriate for anyone’s face.

Why exfoliate? Hormonal fluctuations and rapid cell turnover cause dead skin cells to accumulate on the skin, trapping dirt and bacteria. You need to gently remove this layer to ensure the brightest, healthiest skin possible. Try to stay away from products that contain harmful and irritating chemicals, such as formaldehyde & alcohol. For girls, this includes your makeup. A good makeup that does not contain fillers, parabens, or fragrance is the best. Plus, there are great skincare products out there that don’t contain harmful chemicals.

Do use products that contain skin-strengthening antioxidants like vitamin c, grape seed extracts, vitamin e and more. Many people consider these to be anti-aging, but they are also useful for sensitive teenage skin that needs an extra boost due to stress and environmental factors.

If you suffer from persistent acne, over-washing and using strong chemicals on your skin will probably do more harm than goodIrritating acne-prone skin just promotes an environment that allows bacteria to enter into the pore, starting the cycle all over again. Make sure your anti-acne regimen includes products that calm, soothe and moisturize as well as treat!

 What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic Acid (HA or hyaluronan or hyaluronate) is a substance that attaches to collagen and elastin to form cartilage. It helps increase supplies of joint-lubricating synovial fluid. It is mainly found in the dermis of the skin and forms an important part of the skin matrix, it decreases with age. As we get older our bodies produce less and less hyaluronic acid. The drop starts at around the age of 18-20 years. But 40-50 year olds are estimated to have less than half the hyaluronic acid they had in youth. Lack of hyaluronic acid causes wrinkles on the face and may also be cause for loss of skin elasticity.

Hyaluronic acid is a special protein occurring naturally throughout the human body. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by the body as a constituent of synovial fluid that lubricates the cartilage between the joints. Hyaluronic Acid also plays an important role in tissue hydration, lubrication and cellular function, and is able to hold more water than any other natural substance.

Its unmatched hydrating properties result in increased smoothness, softening and decreased wrinkles. Like many other essential factors, the levels of HA in the body decreases with each passing year. As the levels of hyaluronic decrease it adversely impacts the skin’s ability to retain moisture, thus leading to those inevitable wrinkles.

As we age, the body produces less HA and it becomes more difficult to replace the lost HA. Consuming HA supplements help to replace the lost HA.

In the last two decades, the therapeutic and aesthetic uses of hyaluronic acid have been extended to a number of areas, including treatment of joint pain, use in fertility clinics, and tissue augmentation. In the past few years, biotechnology has been used to develop hyaluronic acid derivatives with tailor-made molecular sizes, which will further increase the potential applications of this remarkable molecule.

It is found in both the deep underlying dermal areas as well as the visible epidermal top layers. Young skin is smooth and elastic and contains large amounts of HA that helps keep the skin stay young and healthy. One of the principle characteristics of HA is its ability to retain water, which contributes significantly to the skin maintaining a youthful appearance. The HA provides continuous moisture to the skin by binding up to 1000 times its weight in water. With age, the ability of the skin to produce HA decreases.

Many actually prefer hyaluronic acid over collagen because the effects last longer.

HA helps your skin regain its youthful look. Moisture is the key to soft, healthy, vibrant complexion. Moisture depletes with age. By replacing the moisture-generating components that naturally deplete with age, we can reverse the signs associated with aging and restore radiance and youth. Hyaluronic acid is an excellent alternative to collagen, particularly since both anti-aging treatments accomplish similar rejuvenating goals.With its gaining popularity, hyaluronic acid is quickly becoming one of the active anti-aging ingredients to look for in skin rejuvenation products.

Topically, the benefits of HA can be quite significant. Imagine the collagen as the stretchy fibers that restore the skin back to shape when stretched. Collagen is like a rubber band but stretch that rubber band a million times, like what we do with our skin and without any moisture. Eventually that rubber band gets overstretched (saggy) and dried out and will most likely break. This is much the same way the collagen in our skin reacts leaving our skin in need of moisture. Now imagine that same rubber band stretched a million times while under water the whole time. Chances of that rubber band drying out and breaking are minimal. Consider the Hyaluronic Acid as the water that keeps the collagen moist and elastic. Collagen is continuously surrounded and nourished by the gelatinous HA substance. Young skin is smooth and highly elastic because it contains high concentrations of Hyaluronic Acid, which helps skin stay healthy. As we grow older, the body loses its ability to maintain this same concentration in the skin. With decreasing levels of HA in the skin, so goes the ability of the skin to hold water. The result, the skin becomes drier and loses its ability to maintain it’s hydration. Hyaluronic acid acts as a space filler by binding to water and thus keeping the skin wrinkle-free.

What is Reiki?  Reiki is Universal Life Energy.  Reiki is an ancient Tibetan and Japanese method of healing and self-empowerment.  It is used for stress reduction and relaxation and to help the body heal itself naturally.  It is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us and all living things. It is what causes us to be alive.  If one’s life force energy is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress.  If one’s energy is high we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

I attend the International Dermal Institute Postgraduate class “Successfully Treating Hyperpigmentation” today.   The class was in-depth, scientific, comprehensive and organized; it’s main focus on skin type classification, skin histology, and anatomy of a melanosome, signaling the melanocyte, causes of pigmentation, pigmentation disorders, and ingredients to inhibit pigmentation, medical options and customizing skin treatments.

Hyperpigmentation that lead to skin discoloration can be complicated.  Taking this class today has helped me to establish the causes, type of pigmentation, and treatment protocol. During the practical session we were able to give and received treatments address to our skin type and condition.  Great class, presented by advanced Instructor Sharon Bell.

Melanoma is a malignant tumor that originates in melanocytes, the cells which produce the pigment melanin that colors our skin, hair, and eyes. The majority of melanomas are black or brown. However, some melanomas are skin-colored, pink, red, purple, blue or white. Most melanomas can be treated successfully if they are detected at an early stage. If melanoma is not detected at an early stage, it can spread to other parts of the body and is potentially a lethal form of cancer.

 Symptoms of Melanoma

Often the first sign of melanoma is a change in the shape, color, size, or feel of an existing mole. Melanoma may also appear as a new mole. Thinking of “ABCDE” can help you remember what to look for:

Asymmetry: The shape of one half does not match the other half.  Normal moles or freckles are completely symmetrical. If you were to draw a line through a normal spot, you would have two symmetrical halves. In cases of skin cancer, spots will not look the same on both sides.

Border: The edges are often ragged, notched, or blurred in outline. The pigment may spread into the surrounding skin.  A mole or spot with blurry and/or jagged edges.

Color: Shades of black, brown, and tan may be present. Areas of white, gray, red, pink, or blue may also be seen.  A mole that is more than one hue is suspicious and needs to be evaluated by a doctor. Normal spots are usually one color. This can include lightening or darkening of the mole.

Diameter: There is a change in size, usually an increase. Melanomas can be tiny, but most are larger than the size of a pea (larger than 6 millimeters or about 1/4 inch). If it is larger than a pencil eraser, it needs to be examined by a doctor. This includes areas that do not have any other abnormalities (color, border, asymmetry).

Elevation: The mole has changed over the past few weeks or months.   Elevation means the mole is raised above the surface and has an uneven surface.

Finding melanoma early is the key to curing this terrible disease. That is why learning the ABCDE rule for skin cancer is so important. This system provides an easy way to recognize moles and growths that might be cancerous.

Although most of your “suspicious” moles will turn out to be normal non-cancerous moles, it is much better to be safe than sorry. To not see, or simply ignore an early melanoma can be devastating. Because melanoma can disguise itself as a strange looking mole, be sure to review the ABCDE rule for skin cancer to properly identify abnormal growths.

If your mole or growth has one or more of the ABCDE’s, you should show it to your doctor as soon as possible!

History

When most people think of massage, they think of Swedish massage.  The invention of Swedish massage is credited to Pehr Henrik Ling (1776-1839), a prominent Swedish physician and fencing teacher who combined Chinese gymnastic and medical techniques with early 19th century sports medicine to create a system for relieving sore muscles, increasing flexibility and promoting general health. Ling’s theories were popularized by a fellow Swedish physician, Johann Mezger, who helped legitimize Ling’s techniques in the public’s mind by giving them French names. Most massage practiced in the West is in one way or another derived from Ling’s original work.

Swedish massage is defined by four or five (somewhat familiar) techniques, which have French names: effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), tapotement (rhythmic chopping), and friction (rubbing). Some therapists now incorporate advanced techniques that have rehabilitating effects and stretches for improving your range of motion. But the ultimate goal is relaxation. As the default Western massage, Swedish massage is extremely popular and is simple, soothing touch therapy.

Traditional Swedish massage, “classical massage,” consists mainly of long strokes over oiled skin and kneading of the outer layers of muscle tissue to reduce stress and soothe sore joints and muscles. Swedish massage relaxes the nervous system, aids circulation, and helps with detoxification.

The Swedish body massage has become the most common massage practice in the West, that’s because of the soothing strokes and gentle kneading, which are meant to relax, not stimulate, the body. And yet studies have shown, Swedish massage reduces stress, promotes health, and prevents injuries. At most spas, Swedish massage is the most popular treatment, and it’s for good reason. It helps jangled nerves and release neck knots without being too demanding of the spa-goer

. The principal moves of Swedish massage are:

A typical Swedish massage usually consists of five types of moves. Below are the five moves in Swedish massage. They can be used in any order and is part of the basics of Swedish massage.

effleurage movement1. Effleurage – making long and gliding strokes along the body. The rubbing and pushing of the muscles helps you relax plus reduce tension and stress levels. It has many other health benefits as well such as increase circulation of blood flow to the heart.  Great for the upper back, neck, and shoulders. This is the most common move use in many massages.

 

 

 

Petrissage technique2. Petrissage – Simply put this technique looks like you are kneading dough. It works on your muscle tension and unwinds. The kneading and squeezing motion of this technique gets rid of and smooth out any sort of lumps or impure substances from the muscle so it will be efficient once more.

 

 

tapotment movement3. Tapotement – This is the gentle pounding of the body like the motion you are drumming. There are many ways to form your hands for the drumming. The way you form your hand produces a different sound from slapping to chopping to cupping. This is a very noisy move and is usually used at the end of a massage session as it helps wake you up if you became sleepy.

Vibration – This is the rhythmic and rapid shaking of the body.  Great for the neck and shoulders, normally this is done by a therapists ‘hands but there are now devices that provide the same vibration from cushions and chairs.  It has a very good feeling sensation and you can fall asleep to this very easily.

Friction – This worked on your muscle fibers and is done using circular or perpendicular motions.  The use of oil also helps in creating friction; it is commonly used in Swedish massage.  What type of massage oil that is used depends on the therapist, besides creating friction, the oil also helps in stretching of the muscles.  If you are feeling fatigued, exhausted, or feeling discomfort in the joints getting a massage can help alleviate the aches and pains.

 

 

Today there are many types of massages available.  From deep tissue massage to sports massage, many of these massages of which were based from the foundation of the Swedish massage.  No matter which type of massage you use, there are many available out there.  So for the days you want some time to just relax or unwind head out for a massage.

The Swedish massage is an excellent way to relax your muscles.

Every day women come into my center asking me how to get their skin looking as perfect as possible.  Here are a few of the concerns I hear about most – plus my suggestions for how to take care of your skin so that it always looks it’s absolute best.

Though the functions of ‘skin’ in general are the same regardless of what color of skin one has, but the truth is that people with black and brown skins face different kinds of problems than that of the Caucasians. This happens because people with dark skin have more melanin. It is true that this pigment plays important roles in protecting skins from the sunshine, but it is also true that dark skin care largely differs from that of others’. However, if you are a dark skin person looking for some skin care tips, then this short writing will guide you to the perfect destination.

Exfoliate

You might have that tendency to look gray and ashy, that could be because you’ve not exfoliated your skin.  What exactly will exfoliating your skin do for you?  One of the main thing is to remove dead skin cells from the surface layer of your skin.  By gently exfoliating your skin, not only will you rid your skin of it’s dull grayness but you will see a more even toned and radiant appearance to your skin.

Toner restore the acid/alkaline balance of the skin, because they are pH balanced. Toners also assist in removing the remaining dirt that might have been missed in your cleansing process.

Moisturizer

When you think of Black Skin Care, moisturizers are one of the most important product to use on your skin.  Moisturizers remove that dull, ashy appearance on your skin that you have a tendency to get.

Hormonal fluctuations, plus stress, can add up to adult acne.  Look for cleansers that will clear out your pores without over-drying your skin.  I like ones that contain salicylic acid because the ingredient is anti-inflammatory and it helps skin shed the dead cells that can build up and clog pores.  And treat areas prone to pimples with something that will kill the acne-causing bacteria products with benzoyl peroxide is a great choice.

 

I’m starting to see some fine lines—especially around my eyes and on my forehead.

Wrinkles are caused by making the same facial expressions (like smiling and frowning) repeatedly over many years.  Other ways to help fend off fine lines include using sunscreen daily (the UV rays break down collagen which makes skin to start to sag and wrinkle) and using treatment products that contain potent anti-aging ingredients like retinol to help rebuild collagen and smooth out the skin.

I have dark spots on my face that didn’t used to be there.

Dark spots on your skin can result from different situations.  The inflammation of acne breakouts can activate melanin, so that even when the blemish is gone, a mark can be left behind.  During pregnancy or sometimes when taking the pill, the extra estrogen in your body can make your pigment cells more sensitive to sunlight, resulting in a brown or tan skin discoloration called melisma.  First of all, you need to wear sunscreen with an SPF 30 every single day.  I know, you’re saying my dark skin doesn’t burn, why do I need sunscreen?  Whether you burn or not, the sun’s UV rays are still penetrating into your skin and killing off collagen and messing with your melanin production.  So protecting your skin from the sun is the number one way to prevent brown spots.  To help get rid of existing spots topical treatments may be your best bet, look for products that contain ingredients such as arbutin and kojic acid or use lasers and chemical peels to treat hyperpigmentation.

In addition to regular skin care products, facials are beneficial for looking younger longer. Most everyone washes their face and uses a lotion for moisturizing every day. Soaps and lotions can build up in the skin pores and leave the skin in worse health than it was before using the soap or moisturizer. Facials are a good way to maintain a healthy balance in the skin. Your face is exposed to elements in the air and daily skin hazards. Facials can be a relaxing way to rejuvenate the skin and maintain a healthy looking glow.

Massage isn’t just a luxurious treat to pamper yourself; there are many other healthful reasons to get a massage on a regular basis, including the big one – stress.

1.      Decrease chronic pain: Massage releases endorphins (the body’s natural painkiller) into the brain and nervous system to reduce pain and discomfort without the use of medication. It also activates nerve receptor signals to temporarily block chronic pain signals from reaching the brain. For lower-back pain, try Thai, a form of massage using acupressure points to ease tension and release endorphins.

2.      Strengthen your immune system: Massage increases circulation in your lymphatic system, which plays a major role in warding off infection and healing injuries.

3.      Improve nerve function: Massage relaxes contracted muscles, which can press or pinch your nerves, causing tingling, numbness, or pain. For athletes or those who just love a good workout, try a Swedish massage to lessen the muscle pain that comes with exercise.

4.      Sleep better: Since massage relaxes tense muscles and calms the nervous system, causing your body’s rhythm to slow down, blood pressure is lowered, your heart rate settles and your breathing become deeper and more rhythmic, setting you up for a great night’s sleep. We suggest trying a myofascial massage – forty-five minutes twice a week may help alleviate symptoms of restless leg syndrome, according to the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies. Swedish massage can also help prevent insomnia.

5.      Improve your skin: With so many factors taking a toll on our skin, including the sun, pollution, poor diet, and just the natural ageing process, massage therapy can increase the uptake of vital skin-repairing nutrients and speed the removal of toxins.
